Avoid Selfishness: Prof Opoku Onyinah of Pentecost University

Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah, a lecturer in the Faculty of Theology, Missions and Leadership of Pentecost has urged politicians to avoid selfishness. He said, “politicians and everyone in the privileged position must at all cost resist the temptation to be like King Herod in the bible.”

Aps. Prof. Onyinah said this when he delivered the sermon at Parliament at its End of Term Thanksgiving Service/ 2020 Festival of Nine Carols, at the weekend.

Referencing King Herod, he said privileged persons such as politicians should not only concern themselves with benefits their positions offer them but work towards ensuring the welfare of every citizen. He stressed that Herod’s self-aggrandizement was phenomenal as he was only concerned about his comfort and position, and cared less about the welfare of the people.

Aps. Prof. Onyinah, therefore, entreated them to humble themselves and do what would inure to the benefit of all citizens. “God has a purpose for every one of us He created us in his own image and so we should allow the Holy Spirit in us to speak to us and do the right thing that will benefit humanity.” … he said.

He further urged “parliamentarians who have finished their work not force their way into the system, rather seek God’s guidance on what they could do to support their neighbours and humanity,” he added.

End of Term Thanksgiving Service/ 2020 Festival of Nine Carols was characterized by bible readings, hymns and carols, amid singing and dancing. It was graced by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Special Guest of Honor, who read the ninth bible lesson.

Other dignitaries who read bible lessons included Speaker of Parliament, Rev.Prof. Aaron Michael Oquaye, Madam Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Chief of Staff and Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah., Mr Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu the Majority Leader of Parliament and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Mr James Klutse Avedzi the Deputy Minority Leader and Prof. Amin Alhassan, Director-General, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.

The gathering thanked God for a successful tenure of the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic and ensuring a smooth and peaceful general election this year. They prayed for a peaceful environment and unity of the nation so that the Government could implement policies and programmes to enhance the welfare of all Ghanaians. The ceremony was attended by members of Parliament, the Clergy, heads of public institutions and the diplomatic community.
